Founded in 1907, the University Music Society is the oldest society at the University of Birmingham, and is still the largest music-making body on campus. We have over 400 members and organise a variety of ensembles and concerts at the University and beyond. The society is run by a committee of staff and students and works closely with the Department of Music, which is ranked second in the country for research.
This academic year, the UMS is extremely grateful to have Dr Elaine Padmore, as its Honorary President. Elaine Padmore was a music student at Birmingham University from 1962 – 66, spending a lot of her time singing in Guild operas and UMS concerts. In January 2000 Elaine was approached to head the new artistic team at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where she remained as Director of Opera until retiring at the end of 2011.
The society has two full-sized orchestras, Symphony and Philharmonic, the spectacular Wind and Brass Bands, Chamber Choir, Saxophone Ensemble, as well as the 200-strong University Choir and the ever popular Big Band. The newest member of the society is Chamber Ensembles, where members can get together to form smaller chamber groups.
November 2012 will be an exciting time for the UMS as all of our ensembles will be performing in the brand new Elgar Concert Hall, in the new Bramall Music Building. See our concerts page for full listings.
If this isn’t enough, the UMS holds many popular social events throughout the year for all its members. The highlight of which is the annual UMS Ball held in the spring term, an event you will never forget!
Whether a potential audience member or a prospective performer, the UMS looks forward to seeing or hearing from you soon!
