Brass Band

The UMS Brass Band gives two concerts each academic year. It performs a mixture of classic brass band music and modern works. The Brass band also takes part in the UniBrass competition annually, having recently won the prize for best march in the competition.

All brass and percussion instrumentalists are welcome to join this unauditioned ensemble. Just come along to the rehearsals.

Recent repertoire includes;

  • Kingdom Triumphant (Ball)
  • Dream-catchers (Lovvat-Cooper)
  • Fat Bottomed Girls (Queen)
  • Summon the Dragon (Graham)
  • Death or Glory (Hall)

For the Autumn term the Brass band will be performing alongside Sovereign Brass Band as part of the Bramall Music Festival, a celebration of the opening of the new music building on campus. They will be performing a concert of music from the hit film ‘Brassed Off!’ (1996). The conductor will be Louise Govier.

Louise will be entering her final year of her music degree at the University of Birmingham in September and has previously conducted both the Wind Band and Brass Band. When she is not conducting, she enjoys playing oboe in the University Orchestras. Outside of university, Louise is a member of the Salvation Army, where she sings in the choir and has led small vocal groups. She is also part of the CBSO Leadership project, which encourages singing in schools. Louise hopes to use all these experiences when she conducts the Chamber Choir and Brass Band in the Autumn term.
